Glasgow-Aug 11, 2014-The Hely family, friends and clients are celebrating 90 years of hairdressing at The HelyHairStudio on Saturday 16 August, 2pm till 6pm.

The family believes they may be Scotland’s longest running hairdressing business. Whether or not it is, the journey is the result of three generations of creative flair, love of style, care for clients and dedication to the profession.

Gary Hely thinks that with over 35,000 Hair Salons in the UK clients today are inundated with choice. “What makes us different is our passion for hair from styling and cutting to colouring and relaxing. The combination of offering the best products in the industry, a superb service, close client relationships and keeping ahead of trends has been a winning formula since the 1920s.”

The Hely’s hairdressing talent is clearly in their DNA with more than 60 family members having worked in the business since Robert Hely Snr started ladies hairdressing in Glasgow in the 1920s. Robert Snr was a colourful, award winning, energetic personality who quickly developed an international reputation becoming a hair stylist to the stars including Mae West in 1945. In later years, the business developed a strong and loyal customer base with son, Robert winning numerous prestigious awards, and grandson, Gary styling the models for the famous Tennent’s Lager campaign of the 1990s.

Now, in its 90th year, The HelyHairStudio is a top class studio in Glasgow’s ever more stylish West End. In an interesting twist, 25 Clarence Drive is actually the location which the family owned back in 1944. The new studio embraces the digital age with iPads available for clients to view photos of styles, buy products online and read the latest edition of their favourite magazines. After their visit, Facebook, Twitter and emails help clients keep up with all that is going on at the studio.

Robert, Gary and Sindy are looking forward to the salon’s celebrations on Saturday and have published an amazing collection of photographs at helyhairstudio.co.uk, Facebook and Twitter showing the contribution made over the past 90 years. Gary is keen to hear from anyone who may have photos or other memorabilia which could help to fill in the missing blanks in this remarkable story, “If you think you have something which may help to add to the story, pop in and join the celebrations this Saturday, we’ll make it worth your while!”
